必修科目としての英語について

You might have asked "Is English needed for all Japanese people?" in your junior high school days as English is a mandatory subject. (I heard it was made mandatory also in elementary schools recently.)

My answer (or opinion) to this is "It depends on the person." At least, not everyone needs English at a same level. In Japan, still today, only a relatively little part of population needs to acquire the professional level of English. It requires much amount of time to be masterful in English. It's time which you could have otherwise spent for other purposes.

Why is English a mandatory subject in Japan's education system? I think it's because of the importance of English in today's world and for the purpose of sifting students in terms of aptitude for English. (I suspect that there could be a negative effect to this competitive style of education, though.)

You would perhaps have found in your school life how much you were talented at, and interested in, English relative to others at that point of time. (Of course, you may find your talent and interest in English much later.)

If learning English is too much pain for you, probably you are talented at other things. If learning English is at least not painful for you, you might have a talent at learning English, I think. (It's just my personal guess. Not so much firm opinion. There can be spurious painfulness in learning English owing to non-inherent reasons.)

If you have a talent in learning foreign languages, though, it would not necessarily be English that you're the most interested in. So if you're interested in English more than other foreign languages, maybe you should learn English and it would maximize the benefit not only for you but for others.

And I think that that you're interested in English is that you have found something special of English for you. It might be a mere necessity for some purpose but, beyond that, you might have found something more than that.
